↑ HETSL Family Overview

HETSL (Haute École de travail social et de la santé) is a School of Social Work and Health Sciences located in Lausanne. It is leading Research projects financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS), which requests that every of those projects must be made available to the public in an open format. In order to achieve this, HETSL decided to publish books also in ePub, rather than proposing on their website PDFs of the printed books. The ePubs require a typeface family that represent HETSL values and is highly functional, being used for publications, but also for day-to-day documents of an academic organisation. This means that it has to be highly legible and readable, particularly on screen.

The HETSL typeface is a family that consists of both a Serif and a Sans Serif to allow the client typographic flexibility, and to give choice to enhanced accessibility for long form text documents.

The initial inspiration for the HETSL typeface came from a remix of 3 typefaces; Bembo, Meridien and Syntax, creating an overall humanistic feel with regularized proportions. Remembering that the design is intended for text sizes on screen, its formal qualities take into consideration research on legibility and functionality.

As my design concept was accepted by the group and client, I became the team lead managing the schedule, workload and quality control; assuring that the design concept be delivered. The entire class worked as a team in producing the typeface as well as providing advice and support.
